Closing a paravalvular leak (PVL) used to require another open heart operation. Thankfully today the procedure is much less invasive.
A special catheter is fed to the heart via a vein in the groin, which places a closure device around the leak. In effect this device acts as a plug to stop the leak. The procedure occurs under local anesthetic.
Recovery time from the procedure varies from 4-6 hours, but normally patients are able to return home the same day.
